はじめに
この留学プログラムは、立命館大学薬学部の皆様が５年生になり、病院・薬局実習にて医療現場で薬剤師がどのように活躍しているかを学んだ後に、カナダに行きトップレベルの医療を提供している病院であるトロント小児病院・通称Sickkids、及び世界大学ランキングでも上位にランクインしているトロント大学(U of T)に留学させていただくというものです。
この病院・大学ともに入るには非常に狭き門をくぐり抜けなければならず、このような機会を利用しないと一生このような体験はできないと言っても過言ではありません。
どのようなことを学んだかの一端はここに書かせていただきましたが、やはり言葉に起こすだけでは魅力を伝え切れないというのが実際であり、"Seeing is believing."という言葉があるように、皆様にはやはり実際にそこに行き、見て、聞いて、感じて、学んで欲しいです。
皆様がこの留学プログラムに興味を持ち、少しでも多くの方が参加したいと思ってくれると幸いです。

SickKids で学んだこと
SickKids ではたくさんのことを学びました。SickKids は「SickKids VS」という広告キャンペーンを行っています。

このキャンペーンは開始以来、大きな注目を集めました。
そして病院側は、「このキャンペーンは勇気をくれるし、固定観念を打ち破ってくれる」という家族や子どもたちからの多くの肯定的な反応を喜んでいました。
日本では、こうした広告キャンペーンはとてもできないでしょう。
SickKids には、子どもたちを励ますクラウン（道化師）が3人いました。まるで映画「パッチ・アダムス」のようで、日本の病院では見たことがありません。
薬剤師の仕事も日本とは大きく違います。テクニシャンがいるので、薬剤師は調剤をしません。そのぶん、病棟の回診や患者さんへの服薬指導に時間を使えるのです。
私が薬剤師に同行して服薬指導を見学したとき、その薬剤師は約50分かけていました。日本の薬剤師なら5分ほどでしょう。
これがカナダと日本の大きな違いです。
トロントの街歩きとトロント大学で学んだこと
カナダでは、薬剤師が薬局でワクチン接種を行うことができます。接種の研修を受けた薬剤師が行えるもので、しかも多くの種類のワクチンを扱えます。

「eHealth」を取り上げます。情報技術と医療を組み合わせたものです。日本では狭い意味で電子カルテや遠隔医療などを指しますが、カナダではプライマリケアにも使われています。プライマリケアとは、医療提供者による日常的な医療のことです。
カナダ政府は1997年の連邦予算以来、首相・州首相会議での合意への連邦政府のコミットメントを含め、この分野に投資を続けてきました。この政府の対応が、日本との大きな違いです。

Introduction
In this program, students of Ritsumeikan's College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, after learning in their fifth-year hospital and pharmacy clerkships how pharmacists work in practice, go to Canada to study at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), a hospital providing top-level care, and at the University of Toronto, which ranks near the top of world university rankings.
Both the hospital and the university are extremely hard to get into, and it is no exaggeration to say that without an opportunity like this you could never have such an experience in your life.
I have written here a little of what I learned, but the truth is that words alone cannot convey the appeal. As the saying goes, "Seeing is believing" — I really want you to go there, see, hear, feel and learn for yourselves.
I hope this makes you interested in the program, and that as many of you as possible will want to take part.

What I learned at SickKids
I learned a lot of things at SickKids. They ran the "SickKids VS" ad campaign.

The campaign garnered a lot of attention after its launch.
The hospital was delighted by the strongly positive feedback from families and children, who said they found the campaign empowering and that it broke through stereotypes.
In Japan, we could never run an ad campaign like this.
At SickKids there were three clowns to encourage the children. It was like the film "Patch Adams." I have never seen such a thing in a Japanese hospital.
The work of pharmacists there is very different from Japan. There are technicians, so pharmacists do not compound or dispense. This lets them spend their time on patient rounds and medication counselling.
When I accompanied a pharmacist to observe medication counselling, the pharmacist spent about 50 minutes on it. A Japanese pharmacist would spend about 5 minutes.
This is a major difference between Canada and Japan.
What I learned from a stroll in Toronto and at the University of Toronto
In Canada, pharmacists can give vaccinations, even in their pharmacies. Pharmacists who have completed vaccination training can do this, and they can give many kinds of vaccines.

I would like to focus on "eHealth" — a hybrid of information technology and health care. In Japan the word means electronic health records, telemedicine and so on, in a narrow sense. In Canada, however, it is also used for primary care — the day-to-day health care given by a health care provider.
The Government of Canada has been investing in this since the 1997 Federal Budget, including federal commitments under the First Ministers' Agreements. This government response is a great difference from Japan.
